V Innovation EXPO

This year there was much greater scope available for students in EDGE Year 7, 8 and 9 to demonstrate their ingenious problem solving skills and ability to think creatively. This was due to the fact that the 2016 INNOVATION EXPO opened up new opportunities to explore Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. There were five categories that students could enter into: Scientific Enquiry, Inventions, Reverse Engineering, Environmental Innovation and 3DPrinting Challenge.

U Inno 1 U Inno 2

There were 72 entries in the competition which was judges by five highly enthusiastic and knowledgeable judges. Some of this year’s judges were Aquinas Old Boys, who had been through the process themselves. This innovation proved to be extremely well received as the EDGE students reported that the younger judges, who are all studying at university, were able to understand and relate to their projects. This team of Judges was ably led by Dr. David Macey Emeritus Professor from Murdoch and Notre Dame University. The Aquinas Old Boys who officiated were Daniel Firth (Class of 2014), Ben Davidson, Jordan Lee and Ethan Williams (Class of 2015).

Another Innovation this year was the use of an electronic scoring system. The judges loaded their scores as they completed each assessment and the leaderboard was developed in real time. Daniel Firth who is studying Mathematics at UWA set up a Google Spreadsheet and all judges and myself had access to it.

It was extremely pleasing to see so many teachers bringing their class through the Expo to view the Projects. The use of the Portal for students to provide a promotional video for the school community to view was also a success. We also had an online poll, where students were given the opportunity to register their vote for their favourite project. This was a big hit. Mr. Trevor Lee the new Director of ICT was a great help in getting everything up and running.
There were so many marvelous projects from “These Socks are Alarming, a novel alarm system to “I’m not Eating That” an enquiry into what factors influence our appetite and food choices.
